The Power of Sight,
The Gifts of a Site
47 Park Hill Avenue | Buena Vista / Ashbury Heights
Set on an exclusive, iconic block of Buena Vista / Ashbury Heights, this sophisticated residence is imbued with a rarified air. At once earthy and classic, 47 Park Hill offers an artful environment with a reverence for nature, views and the worship of natural light. A masterful build, the home is informed by the exquisite taste of its adventuresome owner. Great intention is evident in every design decision. Meticulous craftsmanship and idyllic setting result in a dramatic-view home, poised to facilitate both robust city entertaining, quiet repose and seamless indoor/outdoor living.
Several elements inform the astute design and craft of this home: the site is pure inspiration — set on a level, verdant block featuring stunning views at the crest of the hill and surrounded by varied historical architecture — with the majestic city spread out to the East. The innovative floor plan propels a series of compressions and decompressions as the architecture moves through the house, expanding at certain locations and compressing to rise up and meet the views at others. A series of classical repeating elements: arched windows and doors in sets of four from façade to terraces creates balance and harmony; the massive central skylight over the theatrical dining room presides like an oculus, and is repeated at entry, and in the kitchen and references worship of the sun. These architectural patterns introduce and reinforce a sophisticated functionality which are hallmarks of this custom building.
The Mediterranean front gardens and formal façade introduce the home through custom Mahogany doors. An expansive, well-appointed open kitchen continues to a central dining room with soaring double-height ceilings and circular skylight like an oculus opening to the sky. Brilliantly conceived and executed, each component of the home has been crafted for an aesthetically sophisticated owner with luxury and livability in mind.
Rising to the East is the handsome living room with its 500-square-foot view terrace, its elegant formality punctuated by the distinctive modern furniture designs of Kenneth Cobonpue, and the attention-grabbing metal work of artist Daniel Hopper.
The custom, thoughtfully conceived kitchen is refined by useful details including butler’s pantry, rich soapstone island, dual sinks, Miele, Sub-Zero, and Gaggeneau appliances, and glass tile mosaic backsplash.
The expansive home spans four levels, each with spectacular terraces, city and valley views to the East — from the Bay Bridge to Mt Diablo. These deep terraces are discovered via a harmonious series of four French doors. Each of three bedrooms are full suites, with stunning and inventive baths, tall solid doors and windows, and generous custom closets.
Continuous expanses of American Walnut flooring unify the space and anchor custom millwork throughout. Tall custom doors with pewter hardware add polish at every turn. The home is wired for audio and intercom, and features a brand-new forced air heating system, two car side-by-side garage and secure wine storage.
Each of the terraces opens to the view and functions as an outdoor living space, enclosed by the sculptural railings of metal artist Daniel Hopper.
The award-winning landscape firm, Surface Designs, created the playful modern garden including fountain, statuary and outdoor kitchen clad in custom wood screens which create additional hidden, outdoor rooms.
This treasured one block street links Buena Vista Park with Duboce Triangle, Ashbury Heights, the Divisadero corridor and Eureka Valley. Quiet, tailored and surrounded by distinguished classic and modern residential buildings, the area is prized for its leafy park-like setting, its urban centrality and A+ city views. An easy commute to the financial district, proximity to world class dining and shopping districts and lovely neighborhood walks make this a sought-after location in the city.
The home is showcase to an impressive collection of Aboriginal art, assembled over years of travel, illustrating a deep understanding of the spiritual basis for this unique form. Created exclusively by women and passed down from mother to daughter, the creation process of Australian Indigenous Art is actually a ceremony. These dreamings, essentially prayers, are infused with powerful symbols, carried down a family line, and were originally executed in sand. The sand paintings offer an ephemeral expression of the artist’s true purpose. This process was influenced in the 1970s by enthusiasts from the West, and these works are now commonly executed in paint, thus making them permanent and collectible: with each artist’s dreaming, expressed in their unique way — rhythmic, alive and mysterious. The collection was built concurrent with the creation of the home — a rare example of a masterful collaboration between architect, art form and owner. The result is at once elegant, substantial, luxurious and useful, a true expression of the power of good residential design.
The home at 47 Park Hill was reimagined by high-profile San Francisco architect, Geoff Gibson of Winder Gibson in collaboration with the owner and a team of hand-picked and accomplished designers and artisans.
